Our semester will break down into three segments. In the first we'll explore the history of literary and cultural studies via this excellent, brief guidebook:
- Studying English: A Guide for Literature Students by Robert Eaglestone with Jonathan Beecher Field (ISBN: 978-0415837262)
Our work there will be broadened to consider analysis of visual arts, the moving image, sound, and other discrete disciplines via online and PDF resources, which I'll be providing through this blog.
In the second part of the term, we'll apply those skills to a trio of groundbreaking and much-lauded recent books by female authors:
- Bluets by Maggie Nelson (ISBN: 978-1933517407)
- Citizen: An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine (ISBN: 978-1555976903)
- Thunder & Lightning: Weather Past, Present, Future by Lauren Redniss (ISBN: 978-0812993172)
Finally, we'll test your writing skills through two rounds of workshops in the last third of the semester, so no books will be required.
You can find these books at both the UC Bookstore and DuBois and new and used copies should be available via Amazon, ABE Books, Powell's, etc.
